Epic Way to Start a New Year

As temperatures drop, ice anglers get excited.  Walking on water isn't for everyone, however there are those that have the faith.  As colder weather approached hard water anglers start chatting on social media and other forums looking for safe ice.  In fact, we did a little of our own chatting providing viewers with a few updates at Jim Edgar Panther Creek and our excitement was growing as we saw the future weather forecast.

The New Year brought some frigid temperatures and many chose to stay in on New Year's Day, however, the weather didn't stop Capitol Outdoors and Matt Steele from hitting the ice.  We headed to Jim Edgar Panther Creek and in negative degree temperatures searched for some big crappie. However, it didn't quite go as expected.  Enjoy the video below: "Box of Chocolates, You Never Know What Your Going to Catch.

Memories Afield Don't have to Include a Kill or Catch

Like so many of you, once Wednesday approaches I start planning my weekend.  This past weekend was no exception.  I planned on going ice fishing, I didn't know where, or when but I was going.  As Sunday approached i decided to hit Jim Edgar Panther Creek but since I've hit Gridley Lake already a few times and the ice conditions have been iffy at Prairie I decided to do a quick ice check and go.

I started by hitting deep water, then shallow, then deep then shallow and nothing.  Finally spotted a fish on the vexilar and just as soon as he was there it was gone.  Ding, my phone goes off.  It's an old college buddy that I've stayed in contact with over the past few years.  As I mentioned, Adam is an old college buddy who loves the outdoors just as much as the rest of us.

Meeting up with an old buddy to do some ice fishing sounds good to me.  We got to the lake walked out on the ice drilled a hole nothing, moved to another, nothing after about 20 holes we decided to call it a day.  Check out those big ones :)

It didn't matter whether we caught any or not, for me it was about getting outside to enjoy some fishing with a college buddy.

Remember Enjoy the Outdoors, Good Luck and Stay Safe

Top Fishing Destinations in Illinois: Shabbona Lake

Top Fishing Destinations in Illinois: Shabbona Lake

By: Jon Giacalone

Shabbona Lake, located in DeKalb County, was created in 1975 when the Shabbona Dam was constructed across Indian Creek. The 1,550-acre Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area surrounds the lake. There is no entrance fee, and summer hours are 6:00AM to 10:00PM (May 1 - October 31), while winter hours are 8:00AM to sunset (November 1 - April 30). The Upper Fishing Area and Lower Refuge Area at the west end of the lake are designated no-wake areas, and the use of gas engines is prohibited. Gas motors over 10 horsepower are not permitted on Shabbona Lake. Bank fishing and boat access are prohibited in the Lower Refuge Area from October 1 to freeze-up. During periods of severe weather, condition warning flags are displayed at the access sites. For those looking to fish from shore, five earthen fishing piers have been built along the west shore. Each pier is surrounded by six to eight fish cribs placed in approximately 10 feet of water.

5 Preparations and Tips for Ice Fishing

5 Preparations and Tips for Ice Fishing

The Illinois hunting season's time is running up with less then a month to go for ducks in the Northern and Central Zone leaves some to ask what's next?

Well, you're in luck.  Ice fishing is right around the corner.  It's better to get prepared during those weeks leading up to first ice.  Here are 5 Preparations and Tips for Ice Fishing and just a few things that we recommend you look at before you head out on the ice this winter.

Safety First - On the ice safety is and always should be a priority.  Remember All Ice is Unsafe Ice!  With first ice its important to have always have someone with you.  Always check the thickness of the the ice with an ice chizzle or an auger.  Like a life jacket safety spikes should always be worn but especially during early ice.  If you do go through the ice.  Remember to STAY CALM!

Illinois Bait Shops - Big Red's Bait and Tackle

Springfield, Illinois bait Shop

Illinois Bait Shops - Big Red's Bait and Tackle

As we talked a steady stream of phone calls and customers came in to Big Red's on Stevenson Drive in Springfield, Illinois.  "I've been in business for eight years and I'm the only shop that's left here in Springfield."  Owner Trevor Miller said.  Before all the other local bait shops closed up, there was a friendly relationship among the owners. "Now its just me and the big box stores". he continued.    Located just a few minutes down the road from Lake Springfield, most of Miller's customers head out to Sangchris.  "Many of my customers call me once they leave the lake to inform me about the action." he said.

Illinois Bait Shops - B & S Bait Tackle

Illinois Bait Shops

Illinois Bait Shops - B & S Bait Tackle

About a month ago we swung by our local bait shop to pick up some last minute items. Eureka... the idea about writing reviews and a series on Illinois bait shops starting flooding to our mind.

Our local bait shop is B & S Bait and Tackle located outside Ashland, Illinois about one mile east of Jim Edgar Panther Creek's entrance.  Owned by Roy and Sue, a friendly and outgoing married couple of over 50 years, this shop has a real sense of community charm to it.

Illinois' Bait Shops

Illinois' Bait Shops

When was the last time you went to a local bait shop.   For some it has been a while or they'll be swinging by one before they hit the lake on Saturday.  Many of these small bait shops struggle to make a living and others have done well for themselves.
